What are the educational requirements to become a pilot in India?

You must have Physics and Mathematics in your 10th and 12th Standard from a recognized board. English is also a mandatory subject that you must have studied in your 10th and 12th.

Incase you have not done Physics or Mathematics in your 12th Standard, you can do that particular subject from National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

Explain about Class 2 and Class 1 medicals

For a Pilot to obtain his license, he must be medically fit as per ICAO standards, that are adopted by a particular country. In India, you must complete your Class 2 Medical first. This will ensure you have a Permanent Medical Record Number (PMR No). 

Once a Permanent Medical Number is allotted to you, you can appear for Class I medical examination. It is mandatory that you must posses your Class 1 medical license for your CPL in India.

What is the difference between EGCA id, PMR Number, and Computer number?

EGCA is the digital platform that DGCA uses to communicate with all its stakeholders. From the pilots point of you, all the interaction that you shall have with DGCA, is on the EGCA Portal. It can help you with maintaining your e-logbook, request for renewal or revalidation of licenses or medical examinations etc.

PMR Number is the number that is allocated to you as a pilot once you complete your class 2 medicals. Your entire medical history shall be retrieved by DGCA with the help of your PMR number

Computer Number is the number allotted to you after a tedious process, which will enable you to appear for the DGCA ground papers.

I do not have Physics or mathematics in 12th. Can I become a pilot?

Incase you have not done Physics or Mathematics in your 12th Standard, you can do that particular subject from National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

What are the exams to be cleared?

If you are planning to fly in India, you must clear Air law, Air Navigation, Aviation Meteorology, Aircraft Tech General and Aircraft Tech Specific. Apart from this you must also pass the signals test (RTR).

If your plans are to fly from overseas, then it is recommended that you finish three of the ground papers before leaving India. The papers are Air Law, Aviation Meteorology and Air Navigation.

What are the CPL requirements in India?

You must fly for 200 Hours in Total of which

  • 100 hours pilot in command (PIC)
  • 40 hours instrument flight out of which 20 may be on a simulator

  • 50 hours solo cross country

  • 15 hours multi-engine

  • 300 nautical miles solo cross country

  • 10 take offs and landings by night
  • 120 nautical miles check

  • 250 nautical miles cross country check

Which is better? Flying in India, or overseas?

Both has its own merits and demerits. Flying in India removes the hassle of converting your license, or doing additional examination, other than the 5 mandatory papers. But flying in India is expensive, and time consuming.

Flying overseas, is usually faster, cheaper, and more professional. You might have to write additional exams, for acquiring license from that country, and do a conversion of license, when you are back in India.

What would be the average cost and duration to complete CPL?

The average cost that are listed below are in Indian Rupees. These values are approximation and are slightly inflated.

Medicals (Class 1 and Class 2) – 20,000 to 30,000.

Ground Classes – Upto 1,80,000 (Request us for an updated Quote)

Flying in South Africa – Between 31,00,000 to 35,00,000 (Student Dependent including License Conversion)

Flying in India – Between 40,00,000 to 45,00,000 (depending on the school)
